Where did my babies go?
I have had a profound couple of days as I realize (sniff sniff) that my babies are now full fledged KIDS!!! I am keenly aware my children are meant to grow older and more independent each day but the past day's events have me unwilling to accept this fact.
First off, Happy 3rd Birthday to Evan! Yesterday was Evan's big day - complete with a trip to Chuckee Cheese & a home made Mickey Mouse cake. I have yet to shed a tear about birthdays around here, but came close last night! My independent, "64 year old" (according to him) little boy is fully potty trained, hilarious, kind, tender and full of love. He loves his Sissy more than anything and when given the choice of any spot in the family room for tv viewing, he chooses to sidle up right next to her. Happy Birthday to my boy...what a fabulous 3 years it has been!
In my heightened awareness regarding growing kids, Emma suddenly strikes me as a school aged kiddo, ready to be independent and conquer the world. So, for the past few days I've pondered how she got here so fast and where are going...how life will change so much in 7 short months as she begins Kindergarten. Then, as I was watching TV this evening she padded downstairs (at 10 pm mind you) complaining of a sore in her mouth. I felt in her mouth behind her front teeth & sure enough...there were 2 new PERMANENT teeth!! The baby ones are slightly loose & look like the may not be coming out anytime soon so we may have a traumatic trip to the dentist in store too. HOLY COW! I'm not prepared for the tooth fairy at the Krueger house!!
And so it is that kids grow older and sassier and toothier and lovier whether we are ready for it or not...waaaah!
I'll leave you with a conversation Emma and I shared at bedtime tonight:
E: "Mama, when I go to space can you send a crayon with me so I can connect the stars?"
Me: Sure! That sounds like fun!
E: Mom, when will I be big enough to go in space?
M: When you grow up & go to college. You have to work very hard at school & get good grades so you can learn all about going to space.
E: (whines) Awww, why does it have to take so long?
M: Because there is lots to learn - you have to practice reading & math so you can find your way.
E: I sure hope I can go to the stars someday!
And my message to her? Kid...you can do anything you set your mind to!
Meanwhile, Emma and Evan grow each and everyday and I delight in the wonder and discovery of their lives.
Happy New Year!
